"A Place To Belong"
CHURCH HISTORY
On May 6, 1934, Mr. Joe. C. Banks, Mr. Johnnie Moore Jr., and Mr. Charlie Smith held prayer meeting in various homes in the community because at that time there weren't black churches in the area. Through diligent prayers and determination, First Baptist Church was born inside of the old Anahuac School building located on Canal Street. A revival was later held under the direction of Rev. Frank M. Corley. From this 7 people were received as baptism candidates. They were, Mr. Joe Banks, Mr. Charlie Smith, Mr. Johnnie Moore Jr., A.D. Hopkins, Mr. Woodrow Simms, and Ms. May Bell and Hanna Bell Charles. They were baptized April 1, 1934. on Easter Sunday. Thereafter Rev. Frank M. Corley was nominated the church's first pastor. Later deacons were ordained to complete the church officers. There were 7 deacons that were ordained they voted Deacon Charlie Smith as Chairman of the deacons. the church began its new journey as more members were added.
Later a small church was built on the corner of North Texas and Hamilton st the very site in which you see today. It was donated by the Old Taylor Site Company, which at that time the church had approximately 25 members. In February of 1943, Pastor Andy Williams was called to pastor the church under his leadership, the church flourished under his direction. The church grew in great number spiritual and financially, enabling the church to be in enlarge on May 7, 1961.
In 1964, Rev. Richard Roberts was called to lead the flock of The First Church. From his growing concern of the churches structure the church was bricked in, and a steeple was add to the top of the church. other improvements were also made. A visioner of his time, Pastor Roberts sought to serve and better the church as well as the community.
In August of 1996, Peter Singelton began his faith journey as assistant pastor under the leadership of Pastor Roberts until his retirement two years later. Pastor Singleton was later installed as the Pastor of The First Missionary Baptist Church in the summer of 1998. Under his spirited leadership, the church evolved from worshiping 2 times a month to a regular worship service every Sunday. Later a dynamic weekly bible study was added that suited biblical teachings for all ages.
As the church grew, Pastor Singleton's vision and purpose; was to bring back the biblical mandate to the church. Through this, a facility that met the spiritual needs of the youth of today was built on February 17, 2012, adjacent to the church. The bible reminds us that without a vision the people will perish. With people willing to do the work, the vision will certainly perish. We are ecstatic about what God will do in the up coming years through the leadership of Pastor Singleton.
We are here today because of the great leaders who've paved the wave for us. They are as followed.
